OR5L1

Overview

OR5L1 is an olfactory receptor gene identified as one of nine significantly mutated genes (FDR ≤ 0.10) in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) by whole-exome sequencing. Olfactory receptor genes are frequently mutated in cancers due to their large family size, and their functional significance as cancer drivers remains unclear; OR5L1 has not been functionally validated as a bona fide cancer driver.

Open questions

  • Whether OR5L1 represents a true cancer driver or a passenger mutation amplified by statistical analysis of a large gene family is unresolved PMID:22722839
